dc.description Spatial thinking is one of the central axes of the study of geometry, which occupies an important position in the curriculum at different educational levels. In this paper we determine the types of cognitive activity and the level of spatial thinking of a group of ninth year students in their experience with semiotic representations of polyhedra. Their definitions of prism and pyramid were compared with those given by a group of first-semester undergraduate students in Mathematics. This comparison lead us to analyse the way these objects are presented in textbooks and websites. A mixed research approach was used, with an action research design, supported by Raymond Duval's theory of semiotic representations. The analysis of the tests determined difficulties in the use of verbal language when describing polyhedra and a low level of spatial thinking to transform a 3D figure. It was also found that there is no significant difference in the conceptions of 3D objects given by the two groups of students. Part of this confusion was attributed to errors present in some textbooks and websites. en-US
dc.description El pensamiento espacial es uno de los ejes centrales del estudio de la geometría, la cual ocupa un lugar importante en los planes de estudio en los diferentes niveles educativos. En este trabajo se determinaron los tipos de actividad cognitiva y el grado de pensamiento espacial de un grupo de estudiantes de grado noveno al experimentar con representaciones semióticas de poliedros. Adicionalmente, se contrastaron las definiciones de prisma y pirámide en dos grupos de estudiantes, analizando los libros y sitios web de mayor consulta por ellos. Se utilizó un enfoque de investigación mixto, con un diseño preexperimental apoyado en un análisis descriptivo y correlacional, sustentado en la teoría de las representaciones semióticas de Duval. Se determinaron dificultades en el uso del lenguaje verbal al describir poliedros y un bajo nivel de pensamiento espacial para transformar una figura 3D. Se evidenció que no hay diferencia significativa en las concepciones deficientes dadas por los dos grupos de estudiantes. Se atribuyó parte de las dificultades a los errores y forma de presentar la temática de poliedros en libros y sitios web, se plantea la necesidad de diseñar ambientes en los que no se priorice la comprensión de poliedros a través de la definición. es-ES
